The Ainu have struggled through the harsh winters of Hokkaido for centuries, known for being the Region in the world with the most snowfall in the world​. However a new challenge faced these people in the last hundred years that has radically changed the Ainu. Japanese colonization and subsequent assimilation has left the Ainu community as a people that long to retain and fight for their culture within the modern era.
